O FIO-02.png

WHY THE "ORGAN"?

Did you know that the organ is known as the Rex Instrumentorum (the king of instruments)? No other musical instrument is so complex and so complete... a violin always has four strings, a piano, 88 keys. An organ can have one or multiple keyboards, from 24 to 56 keys approximately, a pedalboard or not, just a few or hundreds of stops and so many combinations and variations that we can affirm that until the 19th century, no organ is alike.

WHY "SANTO TIRSO AND VILA NOVA DE FAMALICÃO" ?

Did you know that Santo Tirso and Famalicão have the most significant cluster of companies in the organ-making field in Portugal and that these two cities produce organ pipes and other organ parts to some of the most important instruments of the world? And did you know that Portugal is one of the countries with more preserved historical instruments of the world?

WHY "INTERNACIONAL"?

We strongly believe that culture can and should be available to EVERYONE. We believe in the decentralisation of culture. That is why we bring some of the most renowned international and national organists to share their talent and art with our audiences.

SO... THE FIO: INTERNATIONAL ORGAN FESTIVAL IN VILA NOVA DE FAMALICÃO AND SANTO TIRSO!

The FIO is the thread that unites through music the cities of Vila Nova de Famalicão and Santo Tirso, organizing solo organ recitals, voice and organ concerts, soloist instruments and organ, organ and orchestra, organ and dance... because the organ is a solo instrument and an accompaniment instrument, a liturgical instrument and a concert instrument, it can be fixed or movable, medieval, renaissance, baroque, romantic or contemporary and, therefore, there is a repertoire to every kind of instrument. Furthermore, the organ is such a diverse instrument that the possibilities of enjoying it are multiple.

We propose concerts in the principal churches of the councils of Famalicão and Santo Tirso and other sites and distant parish churches. And if there is no organ, that is not a problem. We will bring one!

WHO ARE WE

The FIO is organised by the Tagus-Atlanticus Associação Cultural, a non-profit organisation that since 2011 promoted cultural events with the purpose to promote culture and heritage of Ibero American countries, and by the JMS Organaria, a company founded in 2015 and specialised in the construction of reed pipes for organs and the restoration of historical instruments.

That is how an organist and organologist, two organ makers and a lyrical singer who loves organs got together to materialise this idea. We should also mention that this project wouldn't be possible without the support (which was almost way beyond the financial aspect) of the City Halls of both cities, and some companies which believed in our project since the first edition and others that have joined us over the past years.

And when so many people have the same goal, do you know what happens? More than 7000 people have attended our live concerts, and more than 15.000 have watched the streamed concerts. Besides that, thanks to the support of the FIO, ten churches have restored their inoperational instruments or bought new organs.

Because:

"When one dreams alone, this is just a dream. When on dreams with others, that is the beginning of a reality!"

 (Miguel de Cervantes)
